New podcast features seasoned journalists unpacking Minnesota’s biggest headlines
Minneapolis, Minn. – The Minnesota Star Tribune announced the official launch of the new podcast “Essential Minnesota” on Friday, April 17. Every Friday, “Essential Minnesota” will feature journalists from the Midwest’s largest newsroom whose expertise brings context, depth and detail to the biggest stories in the North Star State. Today’s launch episode features music critic Jon Bream sharing stories from his decades-long relationship with Prince as we approach the 10-year anniversary of his death.
“‘Essential Minnesota’ highlights the stories that matter most to Minnesotans, told by experienced Minnesota Star Tribune journalists who offer rich context, nuance and depth,” said Kathleen Hennessey, editor and senior vice president for the Minnesota Star Tribune. “No AI, no fake news — just real local journalists doing what they do best.”
Hosted by Melissa Townsend, senior audio producer at the Minnesota Star Tribune, “Essential Minnesota” is a deeper dive into the stories that interest and impact Minnesotans. The podcast is released every Friday. The debut episode features Jon Bream, the Minnesota Star Tribune’s music critic of 50 years, reflecting on his decades-long coverage of Prince in advance of the 10th anniversary of the artist’s death on April 21, 2016. Bream covered Prince from the recording of his 1977 debut album through his death in 2016.
In the episode, Bream describes an era when music critics had unusually close access to artists — even those like Prince, who rarely spoke to the press. He shares stories from their nearly 40-year relationship, which he describes as “respectful yet tumultuous,” and discusses developments in the decade since Prince’s death, including ongoing issues surrounding his estate.
Episodes of the “Essential Minnesota” podcast release every Friday on all major podcast platforms. Previous pre-launch episodes are now available, including a 3-part series examining the truth about fraud in Minnesota over the last decade.
