Minnesota’s largest news organization introduces a redesigned mobile website, designed for the reader on the go

MINNEAPOLIS (July 5, 2011) — Star Tribune Media Company today announced the launch of its new mobile website featuring cleaner navigation, faster article retrieval and improved readability. The new site is built with the on-the-go mobile reader in mind.

“The new website is one of the many strategic investments Star Tribune is making to provide Minnesotans with current, local and breaking coverage of the issues they care about most, when and where they want it,” said Star Tribune CEO Mike Klingensmith.

Built around best design practices, the new mobile website has been redesigned to align closely with the design of Star Tribune’s new website, StarTribune.com, while making it easy to view content on-the-go. New features include:

Refreshed design

Improved interface

Enhanced readability

Faster article and photo retrieval

Streamlined navigation

Cleaner content delivery

“The new mobile site is graphically aligned with our widely praised website redesign, which we launched in the spring,” said Jim Bernard, Star Tribune SVP of Digital. “We’re upgrading our mobile site because we want to deliver the news readers depend on in the all the formats they use every day.”

Additional mobile offerings coming soon

Already, the mobile website receives more than 1.3 million visits each month and Bernard expects this number to grow as readers become familiar with the new site: “Readers are requesting their news on the go. Between now and the end of the year we will also release device-specific applications for Android, iPhone and iPad.”

“Our goal is to leverage to the fullest the power of Minnesota’s largest newsroom and the content it produces every day,” said Bernard. “Each new digital offering represents more ways Minnesotans can experience and connect with Star Tribune.”

An opportunity for advertisers

Klingensmith said the new mobile website has been built with the readers’ needs at the forefront but also represents an improved opportunity for advertisers. “The new mobile website brings the reach and editorial muscle of the largest news gathering force in Minnesota right to the reader’s pocket, making it an effective way to reach audiences in Minnesota,” said Klingensmith.
