Hosted by Allison Kaplan, Berkus will share insights on design, storytelling and building an iconic career

Minneapolis, Minn. — The Minnesota Star Tribune today announced an upcoming North Star Live event featuring Nate Berkus, one of the world’s most influential interior designers and Twin Cities native. Hosted by the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Allison Kaplan, Berkus will take the stage for an evening of design, storytelling and inspiration on Tuesday, June 2 at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia).

Berkus, known for his elevated yet accessible approach to design, will reflect on his three-decade career spanning television, bestselling books and globally recognized home collections. This Twin Cities stop is part of his ongoing book tour to celebrate his latest book, “Foundations,” released in fall 2025 and named a New York Times bestseller.

“Nate is celebrated for his design expertise, but less often discussed is his incredible business savvy,” said event host Allison Kaplan, director of innovation and engagement for the Minnesota Star Tribune. “I’m excited to dig into how he built his company, shapes his brand and chooses his product collaborations. And of course, get some design advice!”

Consistently named to the prestigious AD100 and Elle Décor A-List, Berkus has been featured in Architectural Digest, Vogue, The New York Times, Fast Company and The Wall Street Journal. His work blends global inspiration with deeply personal storytelling, helping audiences see how great design can feel both aspirational and accessible.

The evening will be moderated by Kaplan, who brings more than 20 years of experience as a journalist, editor, broadcaster and entrepreneur, and is known for her work fostering community connection through storytelling. Kaplan publishes the twice-weekly Minnesota Star Tribune newsletter North Star Insider, focused on business and entrepreneurship in Minnesota.

Kaplan, childhood friends with Berkus, added, “We’re thrilled to bring Nate home to Minneapolis — the city where he grew up and first fell in love with vintage shopping — for what promises to be an inspiring evening.”
