Minneapolis, Minn. The Minnesota Star Tribune today announced the appointment of Raphael Brion, respected critic and editor in the national culinary scene, as its new restaurant critic. An influential storyteller in the world of food journalism, Brion brings a bold and discerning palate, a sharp editorial sensibility and a deep appreciation for regional dining scenes to the Midwest’s largest newsroom.

“Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time in the Twin Cities, and I’ve become such a big fan of Minnesota’s bold, progressive and diverse culinary landscape,” said Brion. “I’m thrilled to join the incredibly kind, smart and driven team at the Minnesota Star Tribune. I could not be more hungry to get started.”

Originally from Belgium, Brion has spent significant time cooking in Michelin-starred restaurants in New York City. His journalism resume includes some of the most respected names in the food media landscape. Most recently, he served as restaurant editor at Food & Wine where he led restaurant coverage nationwide, managed teams of contributors and curated the magazine’s annual Best New Chefs list — earning a James Beard Award nomination for his editorial work. His byline and editorial leadership also defined stints at The Infatuation, Wirecutter/The New York Times, Bon Appétit, and Eater National, where he was part of the team twice nominated for a James Beard Foundation Journalism Award.

“Raphael’s deep expertise, national reputation, and infectious curiosity make him the perfect critic to take readers inside Minnesota’s ever-evolving restaurant scene,” said Kathleen Hennessey, editor for the Minnesota Star Tribune. “He brings a deep respect for our audience and chefs, plus a sense of adventure.”

Fluent in French (and conversational in kitchen Spanish), Brion holds a B.A. in Cinema and Comparative Literature from SUNY Binghamton. His work reflects a belief that restaurants are about more than just food — they are cultural landmarks, community spaces, and reflections of identity and history.

Readers of the Minnesota Star Tribune can expect thoughtful, engaging reviews, in-depth features, and a fresh perspective on the people and places shaping how Minnesota eats — from buzzy tasting menus to familiar neighborhood gems.
