Minnesota Star Tribune Advertising Acceptability Policy Principles
Trusted Source: The Minnesota Star Tribune continually strives to be a trusted source of information that helps people pursue their interests and enrich their lives. We recognize that the success of advertising depends on its credibility. Our commitment to integrity, responsiveness, and open expression underpins the trust our readers place in our advertising content.
Free Market for Ad Content: The Minnesota Star Tribune’s advertising policies and standards are designed to maintain an open space for all points of view, recognizing the public good that comes from a free flow of ideas and opinions. Decisions regarding advertising acceptability are guided by these standards and not by personal values about a particular product, service, or expressed view.
Balancing the Needs of Consumers and Advertiser: We recognize that both consumers and advertisers are our customers, and that their expectations of the Minnesota Star Tribune are continually evolving. We strive to understand our role in this marketplace and to ensure that both audiences are well served by our advertising policies. We address reader complaints and reserve the right to investigate advertising claims if we believe an ad may be misleading or fraudulent.
Policy Flexibility: These policies are not absolute and may evolve over time or be applied situationally. Nothing in these standards, or in the procedures developed to support them, limits the Star Tribune’s sole discretion to accept or reject any advertisement for any reason. Advertising policies are developed and revised as needed based on the guiding principles outlined above.
To maintain these high standards, the Minnesota Star Tribune Advertising Department strives to publish advertising that meets the following criteria:
- Truthful and Transparent Advertising: Advertising must provide adequate disclosure regarding the nature of the product or service, the terms of the offer, and the identity of the advertiser. Advertising must not be misleading, false, deceptive, fraudulent, lacking reasonable substantiation, or untruthfully disparaging toward any individual, company, organization, group, or competitor.
- Legal Compliance: Advertising must comply with all applicable laws and regulations. In addition to any specific legal restrictions cited below, The Minnesota Star Tribune will not carry ads for products or services that are illegal under Federal or state law. Advertising must not encourage the evasion of law, incite violence, or express or imply illegal preferences based on race, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, or any other legally protected category.
- Good Taste: Advertising must reflect reasonable standards of good taste and respect for people, while recognizing and honoring the diversity of views, political or religious beliefs, and ethical standards within our community.
- Child-Friendly Content: Advertisements directed to individuals under 18 must not promote products, services, or content that is illegal, inappropriate, unsafe, exploitative, or that exerts undue pressure on young audiences.
- Star Tribune Brand Integrity: The Star Tribune generally does not accept advertising from media companies or advertising agencies promoting their own products or services, directly or indirectly. We are not obligated to accept advertisements that attack or question the quality, integrity, management, or productivity of the Star Tribune, or that otherwise harm our reputation.
Advertiser Responsibility: Regardless of whether the Star Tribune accepts an advertisement, the Advertiser and any involved advertising agency are ultimately responsible for the advertisement’s content and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. We reserve the right to require substantiation of factual claims. When an advertisement uses the name, likeness, or trademarks of individuals or organizations, the advertiser must obtain the necessary permissions.
