Star Tribune Unveils “Star Tribune Digital Archives” for Unlimited Access to 150 Years of Daily Newspapers
MINNEAPOLIS – May 3, 2017 – Star Tribune Media Co., Minnesota’s largest media company, today announced the launch of the Star Tribune Digital Archives, a unified, complete, and searchable collection of every article published by the newspaper since its founding as The Minneapolis Tribune in 1867. The launch comes in advance of the company’s 150th anniversary later this month on May 25.
Underwritten by exclusive sponsor Thomson Reuters, the Star Tribune Digital Archives was created in partnership with Newspapers.com, which has digitized 275 million pages from more than 5,000 newspapers dating back to the 18th century. The Star Tribune archive includes news, sports, and comics as well as notices of births, marriages, and deaths from more than 54,000 daily issues of the Minneapolis Tribune, Minneapolis Daily Star, and the merged Star Tribune. With a simple but powerful interface, users can search the Star Tribune Digital Archives in a Google-like fashion using any search term and instantly view high-quality, downloadable pages they can print, save and share.
“Thomson Reuters is proud to support the Star Tribune in the launch of its digital archives as we share deep roots in Minnesota,” said Rick King, Thomson Reuters executive vice president and chief information officer. “As a global leader in information-based products, we understand the enormous value in making these 150 years of archives available at last to both consumers and professional researchers.”
“The Star Tribune Digital Archives represent the broadest and deepest resource of Minnesota journalism history—every word of every article on every page of virtually every edition stretching back to our first issue in 1867,” said Steve Yaeger, chief marketing officer for the Star Tribune. “Previously, researchers, historians, teachers, genealogists, and journalists could only rely on an incomplete array of microfiche, microfilm, and physical pages from locations such as libraries or historical societies. This new archive now provides an online, searchable, comprehensive resource that’s available from virtually any network-connected device. We’re delighted to partner with Newspapers.com to make this available to the public, and we’re proud to have Thomson Reuters as our exclusive underwriting sponsor for this initiative.”
Pricing and Availability
Access to the Star Tribune Digital Archives is offered under two plans. For occasional users, 30 day access is available for $7.99 per month. A six-month subscription is available for $29.95. For a limited time, users can request a free PDF of any front page from the archives, delivered by email.
