Star Tribune Names Thom Kupper Assistant Managing Editor for Business
MINNEAPOLIS – Feb. 2, 2015 – Star Tribune Media Co., Minnesota’s largest news organization, today announced it has named Thom Kupper its new assistant managing editor for business, effective immediately. Kupper succeeds Todd Stone, who has accepted a position with The Houston Chronicle. In his new role reporting to Rene Sanchez, editor and senior vice president, Kupper will oversee all aspects of the Star Tribune’s acclaimed coverage of the state’s economy, industry and business community.
Kupper joined the Star Tribune in 2010 as senior business editor. He played a pivotal role in a major redesign of the paper’s Sunday business section and has continued to direct that section’s content and production.
Kupper has been a driving force behind some of the Star Tribune’s most ambitious reporting efforts, including the “Left Behind” (2014), “Land Rush” (2012) and “Fallen Timber” (2012) series. Under his leadership, Kupper’s teams have reported numerous major stories, such as the Target data breach, a massive reorganization at Supervalu and the MNsure rollout.
Before joining the Star Tribune, Kupper spent 13 years as a business reporter and editor at The San Diego Union-Tribune. As a reporter, he was a finalist for the Livingston Award that honors the best work in the country by journalists under 35. As deputy business editor, he oversaw a real estate section that was named the best in the country by the National Association of Real Estate Editors. He started his career as a reporter in metro and later business at The Allentown Morning Call in Pennsylvania. In addition, Kupper annually serves as a judge for the prestigious Gerald Loeb awards. He earned an MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
“Thom is an excellent editor with a deep background in business journalism,” Sanchez said. “We believe covering Minnesota businesses and the state and regional economy is a top priority, and we’re very fortunate to have Thom leading that mission for Star Tribune readers.”
