Nancy Barnes Named Star Tribune EditorMinneapolis/St. Paul - (February 14, 2007) - Nancy Barnes will be the new editor and senior vice president for news of the Star Tribune, effective March 5, J. Keith Moyer, publisher and president announced today.
Barnes, 45, currently is the Star Tribune’s deputy managing editor for content with responsibilities for local news, business, investigations, Sunday and enterprise reporting. She replaces Anders Gyllenhaal, who is leaving to become editor of the Miami Herald.
In her new role, Barnes will be the top editor of the Star Tribune, in charge of the newspaper’s 370-person newsroom. The Star Tribune is the nation’s 10th largest Sunday and 14th largest daily newspaper and is the publisher of StarTribune.com, the leading local website in the Twin Cities.
Barnes joined the Star Tribune in 2003 as assistant managing editor for business. In 2005 she was promoted to deputy managing editor, focusing on expansion and improvement of business coverage, enterprise reporting and the Sunday newspaper.

Prior to joining the Star Tribune, Barnes held various positions at other newspapers in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina, including reporter, copy editor, bureau chief and deputy metro editor. Most recently, she worked for the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer, where she was responsible for the Sunday edition and enterprise reporting.
Barnes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and grew up in Virginia. She has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Virginia in international relations and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
She is married to Sam Barnes, who is editor of the Star Tribune’s weekly West edition. They live in Eden Prairie and have three daughters.
