Editor Anders Gyllenhaal Leaving Star Tribune

Minneapolis/St. Paul - (December 15, 2006) - Anders Gyllenhaal, editor and senior vice president for news at the Star Tribune for the past five years, is leaving to become executive editor of the Miami Herald, effective in February 2007.

Gyllenhaal will replace current Miami Herald editor Tom Fiedler, who is retiring. Both the Star Tribune and the Miami Herald are owned by The McClatchy Company.

“Anders has led the Star Tribune newsroom with passion, grace, determination and a constant desire to improve,” said Star Tribune Publisher and President J. Keith Moyer. “In his time here he has guided the Star Tribune through many positive changes including the redesign of the newspaper and website, the creation of a variety of new sections, the integration of the print and online operations, the launch of three new weekly news sections and the modernization of how the newsroom operates. We will deeply miss his immense talents and his thoughtful pursuit of excellence.”

Gyllenhaal, who joined the Star Tribune in June of 2002, said: “It has been a privilege to be a part of the Star Tribune, a great newspaper that has served this community so well at the same time as it’s worked to create a modern news organization. It’s been a difficult decision to leave, but the leadership of this newsroom will be in very good hands.’’

Gyllenhaal (pronounced JILL-in-hall) has responsibility for the Star Tribune’s news content and it 380-person newsroom staff. Moyer said a search for Gyllenhaal’s replacement will begin immediately.

Prior to coming to the Star Tribune, Gyllenhaal was the executive editor of the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., another McClatchy newspaper. Before that he was an editor, investigative reporter and local reporter at the Miami Herald, and he has held several positions at newspapers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia over the past 25 years.

Gyllenhaal serves on the boards of the Pulitzer Prize, the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and the American Committee of the International Press Institute. He has been a long-time advocate for press freedom and access and served as chairman of the Freedom of Information Committee for the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Gyllenhaal and his wife, Beverly, a syndicated columnist and author, currently live in Edina with their two children.
