Star Tribune Women’s Lecture Series announces speakers for its 2007 season, beginning Jan. 29Minneapolis/St. Paul - (November 27, 2006) - The Star Tribune announced that the featured speakers for the 2007 Star Tribune Women's Lecture Series, presented by Herberger’s and produced by SMART TALK will be Madeleine Albright, Rita Moreno, Erin Gruwell, Joy Behar and Marlo Thomas.
These exceptionally accomplished women will share their inspiring stories and wisdom, beginning with Madeleine Albright on Monday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Orchestra Hall. A question-and-answer session follows each lecture.
Tickets for the 2007 lecture series went on sale to the general public Friday, Nov. 24, 2006. Tickets are sold only as a total series subscription. Prices range from $149 - 269. Madeleine Albright – TELLING IT LIKE IT IS
Monday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis
Former secretary of state, Madeleine Albright speaks with humor, insight and eloquence about her life and career. As a refugee girl, she rose to become one of the world’s most powerful women. While in office, Dr. Albright reinforced America’s alliances, advocated democracy and human rights, and promoted American trade and business. She will share her unique, no-holds-barred account of service at the highest levels of American government.
Rita Moreno – BREAKING THE MOLD
Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis
Rita Moreno first appeared on stage at the age of thirteen and worked steadily until her role as Anita in “West Side Story” catapulted her to worldwide fame. Fighting Latino stereotypes all along the way, she managed to break the mold and set a precedent for actors to be recognized by talent, rather than ethnicity. She has earned an Oscar, a Tony, two Emmys, a Grammy and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Erin Gruwell – TEACHING TOLERANCE, HOPE & SUCCESS
Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis
As a teacher in Long Beach, Calif., Erin Gruwell learned firsthand the hard realities many students faced on a daily basis, including exposure to drugs, alcohol, violence and race-based hatred. With Erin’s steadfast support, her students shattered stereotypes. They documented their personal stories in journal entries, which was later published as “The Freedom Writers Diary.” Scheduled for release in early 2007, “The Freedom Writers” movie stars Hillary Swank who portrays Erin.
Joy Behar – JOY SCHTICK
Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis
With an M.A. in English education, Joy Behar was a teacher until comedy won her over. Now best known as a co-host of the Emmy Award-winning talk show “The View,” she is never one to shy away from hot topics and tackles them in her legendary way of saying what is on her mind. Joy brings laughter and tears as she weaves stories of her life as a performer, philanthropist and advocate.
Marlo Thomas – STILL “THAT GIRL”
Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis
Actress, author, social activist and television’s first unmarried career woman, “That Girl,” Marlo Thomas continues to create meaningful and successful projects. She has been honored with four Emmys, and written three best-selling books: “Free to Be You and Me,” “The Right Words at the Right Time,” and “Thanks & Giving: All Year Long,” with the proceeds going to various women’s and children’s charities. In addition to writing and acting, Marlo is carrying on her father’s legacy as National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
