Harry Davis Leadership Grant established to support professional development of the United Way staffMinneapolis/St. Paul - (August 2, 2005) - The Greater Twin Cities United Way and the Star Tribune are pleased to announce the establishment of the Harry Davis Leadership Grant. This $10,000 grant, made by the Star Tribune Foundation to the Greater Twin Cities United Way, supports the professional development of United Way staff over the next three years.
The grant is made in honor of Harry Davis, 82, a former Star Tribune executive and civic leader. Davis, now retired, is a long-time United Way supporter and community leader. He started volunteering as a boxing coach in the Golden Gloves program in the early 1940s when the newspaper began to sponsor the amateur boxing program. He moved from coaching into administration of the program in 1960 and later became vice president for human relations. He has been actively involved in numerous Minneapolis civic organizations and served on the school board.
“Harry Davis is a model for anyone who aspires to make this a better community,” said Ben Taylor, the Star Tribune Foundation chair. “He has been the Star Tribune’s enthusiastic United Way ambassador long after leaving the company, and we wanted to honor his work by helping fund United Way staff development.”
First-year funds from the grant will send United Way staff to the leadership programs of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce and St. Paul Chamber of Commerce.
