Star Tribune Unveils Plans to Move into “Star Tribune Building” in 2015
MINNEAPOLIS – April 3, 2014 – Star Tribune Media Co., Minnesota’s largest media outlet, today unveiled plans to relocate its headquarters to 650 Third Ave. So., Minneapolis, which will be renamed the “Star Tribune Building.” The company has completed a comprehensive agreement to lease three floors in the Park Building, part of the 56-story Capella Tower, Minnesota’s second-tallest building. The company expects to fully occupy its space in the new Star Tribune Building in mid-2015.
The new headquarters—providing a high-profile Downtown East presence with proximity to city and county government offices and a skyway connection—will enable Star Tribune to house its newsroom on a single floor. The company also plans to create a street-level presence for its brand through signage and other amenities.
Star Tribune currently occupies the building at 425 Portland Ave., which it sold to Ryan Companies in February. That building is home to more than 600 professionals in the newsroom, sales and marketing, circulation, digital, finance, human resources, and IT. Another 600 Star Tribune employees work at the company’s Heritage Center at 800 North First St. in Minneapolis, primarily in printing and distribution, and will be largely unaffected by the headquarters relocation.
The new Star Tribune building is owned by ASB Real Estate Investments on behalf of their Allegiance Fund. To design its new offices, Star Tribune has engaged Minneapolis-based HGA, Inc., whose well-known local clients include General Mills, Medtronic, and Minnesota Public Radio, for whom it designed the building, newsroom, and studio space. Star Tribune named Jones Lang LaSalle as project manager to oversee the build-out and relocation.
“Rarely does a news organization encounter an opportunity to rethink its workspace from the ground up,” said Mike Klingensmith, publisher and CEO of Star Tribune. “Today, Star Tribune fields the largest newsgathering force in the upper Midwest, reporting around the clock on the stories that matter to Minnesotans. The prospect of designing a space suited to the unique needs of a 21st-century media organization is exciting to all of us.”
