Star Tribune Earns a Record 43 Awards from Society for News Design

MINNEAPOLIS – April 8, 2015 – Star Tribune Media Co., Minnesota’s largest news organization, today announced it earned a record 43 awards from the Society for News Design, whose annual “Best of News Design” competition draws thousands of entries from around the world. Star Tribune will be among the winners honored this Saturday evening in Washington, D.C., at the Society’s annual conference.

The 43 separate honors—nearly twice the number the company has previously won in a single year—earned Star Tribune its first-ever top 10 finish alongside The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other international publications.

Star Tribune’s four-part “State of Wonders” series, published in the Travel section, was recognized in 17 separate awards acknowledging excellence in both photography and design. The series also won two silver medals, an elite award given to work that rises above general excellence. Only 56 silver medals were awarded out of 9,500 entries received for the competition.

The highly praised “Bees at the Brink” series won in a relatively new category that combines work spanning print and digital platforms. That category has recently been dominated by publications such as National Geographic and The New York Times.

Underscoring its deep commitment to visual storytelling, Star Tribune was well represented in many categories, taking honors for its coverage of the mid-term election, four special-section covers in Sports (tied with one other publication for most in the world), and coverage of Metro Transit’s new Green Line and the Target data breach. Individual page design and single photographs earned recognition, as did complete bodies of work in design and photography.
