Star Tribune Announces Departure of Nancy Barnes, Editor and Senior Vice President, after Distinguished 10-Year Tenure Marked by Award-Winning Journalism
Barnes Accepts Appointment as Editor and Executive Vice President of Hearst Newspapers’ Houston Chronicle
MINNEAPOLIS – Sept. 18, 2013 – Star Tribune Media Co. today announced the resignation of Nancy Barnes, editor and senior vice president, effective Oct. 11, 2013. Earlier today, Barnes was named the editor and executive vice president of Hearst Newspapers’ Houston Chronicle,
the leading newspaper in the fifth-largest market in the U.S. Simultaneously, Publisher Mike Klingensmith announced that Star Tribune has begun a search for a replacement that will encompass both internal and external candidates.
As editor of the Star Tribune for the past six years, Barnes has led the state’s largest newsroom through a time of great change as the company changed ownership and became one of the strongest and most successful regional news organizations in the country, culminating in a 2013 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. During a time when many media companies began shifting resources away from newsgathering, Star Tribune invested in journalism under Barnes, delivering more original local and investigative reporting and expanded content in the Business, Taste, Travel and Outdoors sections. Star Tribune also debuted many new products and special sections for readers, from a popular “Best of Minnesota” annual to a “Top Workplaces” program. The changes contributed to three straight years of circulation growth.
Barnes led the successful integration of print and digital news teams into a unified, multiplatform newsroom that creates and manages content and breaks news across print, digital, and social media around the clock. She also spearheaded the launch of numerous digital products, from
mobile and tablet news apps to e-books and websites dedicated to Minnesota high school sports.
“While we accept this resignation with great regret, we offer nothing but our very best wishes to Nancy as she embarks on the next phase of a very successful career,” said Klingensmith. “Under her leadership, the Star Tribune has made tremendous gains in the quality and depth of
the news and information we present and innovative ways we deliver that content to readers. She leaves behind a world-class news operation that is well-positioned to achieve even greater successes thanks to her efforts.”
