Mostly Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. with nights and weekends as necessary.

Job Description: The Star Tribune has a terrific opportunity for an experienced education reporter. This person will cover the St. Paul Public Schools, Minnesota's second-largest school district, and write about broad education issues shaping teaching and learning across the state. This reporter will capture the successes and shortfalls of the St. Paul Schools, crafting stories that help parents, teachers, students, taxpayers and policymakers better understand what makes the system tick. Three-quarters of the district's 41,000 students are children of color and many of them come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. So this reporter will stay attuned to the opportunities and challenges that such a diverse student population creates. This reporter also will identify and cover statewide education trends and issues with a sense of how developments here fit into the national picture. From the numbers (testing and finance) to the people in and beyond the classroom that shape our schools, this reporter will help readers better understand why our schools are what they are and how they might be improved.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have demonstrated beat reporting excellence for a daily news organization. Computer-assisted reporting skills a plus. We're looking for someone who can react quickly to news, cut through the muck of ''educationese,'' and bring education issues compellingly to parents, students and taxpayers. Must have the ability to work ollaboratively with team members, editors, photographers and others. Must value diversity in reporting and writing.
