Working at the Star Tribune

A Look at Our Workforce

The Star Tribune is among Minnesota’s 100 largest employers. Our workforce comprises both independent (non-union) employees and union-represented employees.

The Star Tribune makes news and information available to readers seven days a week, 365 days a year. To make that happen, our employees work a variety of days and shifts.

The majority of our employees work in the Twin Cities downtown area – in office buildings near the Metrodome or at our production facility in the Warehouse district.

In addition to the main newsroom in Minneapolis, some journalists are assigned to news bureaus in Duluth and St. Paul, Minn., and Washington, D.C. The Star Tribune is affiliated with Scripps Howard News Service, Associated Press, the New York Times News Service and a number of other news wires.

Organizational Structure

The Star Tribune is organized much like other newspaper companies. The basic operations include the creation of news and editorial content for readers, the sale and development of advertising and marketing content for advertisers, and production and distribution of our products. There are also staff organizations to support the overall company.

News

The news staff writes, photographs, edits, designs and presents news and information in the newspaper, and supplies news content to startribune.com. The news staff competes aggressively in St. Paul, as well as Minneapolis, and providing excellent coverage of the Twin Cities’ growing suburbs is a priority.

Editorial

The editorial staff operates independently from the newsroom under the journalistic principle that neither staff should influence the other. The editorial staff produces the Star Tribune's editorial and opinion/editorial pages. Editors and writers research, write and present Star Tribune editorials, which express the institutional views of the newspaper. They also produce or select columns, cartoons and other forms of commentary, and provide space for opinion pieces and letters from readers to provide diverse perspectives.

Interactive Media

The interactive staff is responsible for StarTribune.com. Although much news content used on StarTribune.com comes from the newsroom, interactive staff use their unique skills to add multimedia elements such as audio and video of news events to articles and photographs supplied by the newsroom staff. The interactive staff develops and maintains the extensive advertising and marketing sections on startribune.com, including classifieds, banner ads, the Shopping channel and much more. They also provide website development services to external clients.

Operations and Production:

Operations includes support functions such as information technology, building services, facilities management, security, purchasing, the mail center, shipping and receiving, and the cafeteria. Production produces, prints and distributes the Star Tribune newspaper. More than 800 employees work at the Heritage production facility to accomplish this goal.

Circulation

Circulation is responsible for sales, home delivery service and single-copy distribution of the company's newspaper.

Sales and Marketing:

The sales organization focuses on helping advertisers successfully communicate and connect with responsive consumers. This is accomplished through both traditional advertising and marketing programs, including online advertising, direct marketing and niche marketing. The marketing staff provides marketing communications, brand management, marketing planning, creative services, marketing research, event and partnership marketing, and consumer direct marketing.

Business Support

Business support functions include finance, communications, human resources and resource protection.

The Finance Department manages accounts payable/receivable, payroll, the company’s general ledger and budgeting processes.

Responsibilities of the Communications Department include both internal and external communications, media relations and community affairs.

Human Resources handles recruitment and hiring, and benefits administration; and provides employees and their managers with a wide variety of programs, services, counsel and information.

The company's resource protection function manages safety, workers' compensation, occupational health and wellness.
