Photography and design are important contributors to our culture of excellence. Under the leadership of Cory Powell, Assistant Managing Editor, Design and Readership, the Star Tribune won six awards of excellence for the October 2005 redesign and one silver medal; plus four awards for individual efforts from the Society for News Design, the newspaper industry’s premier design competition.

Pictures are bigger and better than ever, thanks to the efforts of all the photographers, photo editors and Director of Photography Peter Koeleman. The Star Tribune has a long history of excellent documentary photography, and in 2006 our standing was enhanced by several important national awards. Jim Gehrz was named Newspaper Photographer of the Year by the Minnesota News Photographers Association; this is the fifth time he has received this honor. Jim also received the Henri Nannen Prize (Germany) for his photos of the soldier, Jessica Clements. Brian Peterson's Best of Show Award from the Minnesota News Photographers Association and Richard Sennott's first place award in the Pictures of the Year International
